Product Description

A few pounds make a big difference when it comes to lugging your notebook. And that's just one of the reasons why, at just 4.7 lbs, the Averatec AV4270-EH1 13.3" Notebook PC makes a great deal of sense, particularly if you're one of those road warriors who needs to keep their computer with them at all times. The system's top-end speed isn't going to set any records and its 3D graphics capabilities aren't going to thrill hardcore gamers, but battery life is reasonable, storage space is impressive, and most of today's important amenities are present and accounted for. Moreover, this is one of few notebooks of this size and price range that incorporates DVD burning. If you're always on the go, the Averatec AV4270-EH1 makes for a compact, solid, and visually appealing traveling companion.
Processor:
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. The Averatec AV4270-EH1 is equipped with an Intel Pentium M 740 processor, one of three components that comprise Intel's efficient Centrino system (the others being a specialized Intel chipset and integrated wireless technology). Centrino-equipped notebooks are generally smaller, easier on the batteries, and more versatile than their non-Centrino counterparts. Rated at 1.7 GHz, this is a midlevel Pentium M and therefore fast enough for most typical notebook applications but not ideal for demanding users who regularly push their computers with complex, power-intensive tasks.

Memory:
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they also keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Averatec AV4270-EH1 incorporates 512 MB RAM. This is a typical allotment for today's midlevel notebooks and certainly enough to ensure good performance during stressful multitasking situations.

Video:
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). The best and priciest graphics controllers feature on-board "dedicated" video memory rather than the less capable but more affordable variety that "share" portions of the system's all-important main memory. This unit features an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900, a hybrid of sorts between the two technologies. Though it shares the computer's main memory, it commandeers more of it than most similar controllers. It is thusly quite capable, though not nearly as powerful as controllers with their own built-in memory. Ultimately, the system is fine for 2D and some 3D apps, but shouldn't be counted upon to efficiently display high-end 3D games or sophisticated 3D animation.

Display:
Though the Averatec AV4270-EH1 is definitely a compact notebook, it nevertheless boasts a surprisingly large 13.3-inch display that features a panoramic, movie-friendly widescreen format and Averatec's AveraBrite technology for brighter, crisper imaging.

Hard Disk:
It wasn't so long ago that a compact notebook generally meant a compact hard drive too. Not so with the Averatec AV4270-EH1, which includes an impressive 60 GB of storage space—more than enough room for a broad range of applications and also a library of space-gobbling music and/or multimedia files.

Optical Drive:
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system sports a Multi-Format DVD +/- Burner through which you can do all of the above. Please note that it does not support double layer DVDs (twice the available storage of traditional DVDs).

Audio:
The unit is equipped with a pair of miniature speakers, a mini microphone jack and a stereo mini headphone jack.

Keyboard and Controls:
You'll control your notebook via a full size keyboard and touchpad.

Connectivity and Expansion:
The Averatec AV4270-EH1offers both wired and wireless connectivity options, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, a LAN port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and integrated 802.11b/g wireless for fast cord-free e-communication via today's two most popular standards, Wireless-B and the much faster Wireless-G. Other key amenities include three high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders), a convenient 4-in-1 card reader for reading memory cards from digital cameras, PDA's and the like, and an S-Video output for high quality digital video feeds.

Operating System and Software:
Averatec's minimalist software bundle includes today's most popular operating system, Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition.

Dimensions and Weight:
Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two lbs and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. At 12.44 by 8.81 by 3.15 by 9.1 by 11.82 by 1.3 inches and a mere 4.7 lbs, the Averatec AV4270-EH1 is much smaller and far easier to carry than the majority of notebooks currently on the market.

Product Description
The Averatec 4200 series notebooks featuring a crisp AveraBrite display are the perfect solution for any user. These ultra portable notebooks feature Intel Centrino Mobile Technology and are equipped with an array of multimedia features such as IEEE 1394, 4-in-1 Media Reader, and a Multi-Format DVD +/- Burner. Intel Centrino Mobile Technology enables greater battery life for increased efficiency and provides built-in 802.11b/g wireless technology that offers greater speed, improved reach and added security.
